5 Creative Ideas for a Date Night in Tokyo

Finally found someone to respond to your online dating profile? Here's 5 creative first date ideas to make that everlasting impression.

After nights of being holed up in your tiny studio apartment with nothing but your laptop and instant ramen for companionship, you’ve finally found somebody who has agreed to spend time with you without being heavily coerced into it.

But your potential new life mate (too soon..?) has shouldered you with the responsibility of organizing the kind of unforgettably epic date that will be brought up in dinner conversations years later as ‘the most magical fun I’ve ever had in my life’.

Stuck for ideas? Here’s a list of creative dates in Tokyo to make that everlasting impression.

1. Make your own Lost in Translation tour

Do you like Lost in Translation? You’ve never seen it? Well, that’s unfortunate because we’re going on a city tour to relive all of the best scenes of the movie…yay! In any case, you’ve seen the movie and always wondered where that naked bar was so you might as well take your date there.

This article has a great list of places featured in the film. Run across the crossing in Shibuya, spend a fortune on espresso martinis at the Park Hyatt and whisper sweet nothings on a crowded street in Shinjuku.

2. Go illegal dancing

I think it was Jesus quoting Kevin Bacon when he said, ‘There is a time to mourn and a time to dance’ which apparently isn’t right now in Tokyo where there is a real-life dancing ban in clubs without a proper boogie license. Look for the ‘No Dancing’ signs and dance as manically as you can until you get thrown out (the winner is the person who can evade the fun police the longest).

3. Race the Yamanote Line route

Every April a group of insanely optimistic people walk to all of the stations on the Yamanote line in the name of raising money for a good cause. If you missed it, you can recreate your own Yamathon in the style of The Amazing Race. This works best as a double date and if you don’t mind spending 16 intense hours together by the end of which your calves might implode.

4. Do a Don Quijote midnight scavenger hunt

Make a list of the most bizarre things you could ever possibly purchase and hunt them down in Don Quijote – you’re guaranteed to find at least 50% of the items in the store which is open 24 hours and organized in such a way that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Tip: if one of the items is soy milk you’ll find that right next to the sex toys and mountain climbing gear.

5. Take your first couple selfies at Purikura

There’s nothing more confidence-boosting than looking at photo-shopped images of yourself and you can put half of those decorated photo strips on your creepy secret love shrine at home. Purikura no Mecca in Shibuya is exactly what its name suggests, with lots of photo booths with different themes like ‘Rumor: Second Lips’ or ‘Lady Monster’ to try out with your date and see which one of you looks better with a moustache.
