Energy Bliss Balls For The Budget Conscious

Swap the pre-packaged snacks for guilt-free, fulfilling energy Bliss Balls.

By 2 min read 4

Store bought cereal bars are often; overpriced, packed with unnecessary preservatives and extremely high in sugar, although they are often perceived as a healthier option to many snacks available, they are infact barely healthy at all.

In the past few years though, the health conscious consumer has put pressure on the food industry to provide more natural based products and it seems these demands are finally being answered, this has resulted in a boom of readily available raw energy bars, which contain only natural ingredients and are free of all other nasties.

A couple of my favourites bars are Rawbite and GoMacro, but they come with a pricetag, GoMacro bars are around 550yen a time, so I have them as an occasional treat rather than a daily elevenses.

So, as always, if you want your daily snack to be tasty, healthy and relatively inexpensive the best thing to do is make it yourself!

Bliss Balls are so simple to make; no lengthy prep time is required and they have the added bonus of being bake free, perfect for the ovenless Japanese kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of oats
  • 1 large carrot
  • pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp of nut butter (I use 100% natural crunchy peanut butter)
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 3/4 raisins/cranberries
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup coconut thread
  • 2 tbsp dark chocolate almond butter
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds

Method

– Finely grate the carrot into a big bowl.

– Add in the oats and mix together well.

– Add in half of the nut butter and honey and continue to mix.

– Then add all remaining ingredients (apart from the remaining nut butter and honey).

– Add the remaining honey and nut butter a little at a time, you made need more than 3 tbsp.

– Once the mix is at a nice sticky consistency, you’re ready to roll.

– Roll the balls into your desired size and place on a plate. When you’re done rolling, put the balls into the refrigerator to allow the mixture to set. After around four hours they’ll be ready and waiting.

– They should last for about a week, although mine have always been eaten within a few days…

The amazing thing about these balls is that you can be creative and play about with different recipes. Experiment with a combination of dried fruit, nuts, seeds and also raw cacao until you find your favourite Bliss Balls.

    Hi Daniel

Thanks for your question. For coconut thread you can get it pretty cheap in any Indian store, my favorite is Indo- bazaar, they deliver with cash payments so you don’t need a card. You can get oats in a lot of places now, I buy in bulk from Amazon as it’s much cheaper. For nut butter you can get from most big supermarkets or try kaldi. For seeds and nuts I go to donki horte, they have a pretty impressive range now. Also you can try an online shop called iherb, it sells everything and delivery charges are reasonable so try them for all health related foods and spices. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other queries : )
