Gratify Your Mexican Cravings at Guzman Y Gomez

Chill and dine with your amigos at this casual Mexican restaurant in Harajuku

If you’re a foodie who’s in constant search for new tastes and flavors you would go anywhere to satisfy your adventurous taste buds. This becomes a challenge when you’re naturally frugal, but a craving for Mexican strikes and there’s no other choice but to satisfy it.

After two Mexican joints in my prefecture left me disappointed I decided to finally give Guzman Y Gomez Mexican Taqueria a try. They opened their first branch in Tokyo last April and have since gained positive reviews.

The black and yellow signage of the Australian-born Guzman Y Gomez on the second floor instantly catches the eye and the entrance looks like a typical fast food chain. The server spoke clear English and ordering was hassle-free. Holding my table number in one hand, I was impressed by the effortlessly stylish interior and started snapping photos of the wall art, which is commissioned by GYG themselves to support Mexican artists. At the back, they even had a foosball game that doubles as a table for 4.

Wood and brick walls plus modern furniture create a creative contrast.

I sat at a multicolored tiled seat and my grilled chicken burrito (¥750) arrived in less than 5 minutes. I took my first bite and it made me “Mmm…” and close my eyes for a split second like in scripted TV commercials. The grilled chicken burrito with Australian Jack cheese, vegetarian black beans, homemade salsa and brown rice had the perfect blend of flavors, which brought me to someone’s kitchen in Mexico.

I missed eating a good burrito and I was grateful my 1-year abstinence was finally over. There are other mouthwatering fillings available such as: slow cooked beef, grilled flank steak, and pulled pork chipotle, at an additional cost.

For cheapskates, like me, some of the choices were beyond my budget, but I’d be willing to spend that amount for delectable cuisine once in a while. Next time around, I’ll try the quesadillas and hard tacos, together with a frozen margarita. The churros dipped in spicy Mexican chocolate might be a good idea, too.

Play foosball while you’re waiting.

Guzman Y Gomez in Harajuku is a haven for foodies searching for gratifying grub or friends looking for a trendy hangout. Personally, it’s relieving to have found the ideal place to get my burrito fix for when I’m tired of eating bentos from the supermarket.

If you really want to try the real thing, you should taste Burritos from Juarez city, Mexico where they originally come from, to tell you the truth you only tasted the name not the real flavor. The burrito Stew it is much complex and delicious and the cost is cheaper, (even more what you paid in Guzman and Gomez). And Burritos are not from Texas and there’s a variety of stews not just beans. You should try the barbeque and rajas con queso, does are the real thing. Where I come from even the restaurants close early because they ran out of stews. The burritos is the king of fast foods, not just because they serve it in less than 2 minutes but because you can it it anywhere and even cold taste good.

This is the Australians’ vengeance upon American tex-mex, after suffering “Outback Steakhouse”, right?
