The idea of a green juice doesn’t appeal to everyone, nor does the taste. When I get green juices from the juice bar, which include ingredients such as: kale, celery, cucumber, cabbage, lemon and grapefruit, friends ask me “Does it taste good?” I’d be lying if I said it did, it tastes very. . . green and very. . .healthy.
This is enough for me so I’m satisfied with an unappetising drink, however for some people, knowing something is good for them, isn’t always enough to persuade them to drink green.
But there is a way to satisfy both your taste and get your green fix, this is with a green smoothie as opposed to a green juice. Juices are usually vegetable based and very low calorie, smoothies are usually fruit based, higher in calorie (but still healthy), thus higher in taste appeal.
The recipe for this green smoothie is tangy and delicious. Give it a go for yourself.
Ingredients: (makes 2 smoothies)
- 1 banana or avocado*
- 2 kiwi fruits
- 1 apple or pear
- a generous squeeze of lemon
- a handful of spinach (or any green leaf, kale, Japanese komatsuna)
- a glass of water
*avocado may seem like a strange ingredient for a smoothie, but in fact it works very well, with any smoothie, resulting in a smooth, creamy texture.
If you want to up the health levels then you can add a shot of wheatgrass (available at health food stores). Although this does make the smoothie more green juice like, ie not as tasty.
Preparation:
Wash the spinach and apple thoroughly. Remove the stalks from the spinach and place into the blender. Add in the chopped apple (chopped into bite sized pieces).
Chop the kiwi in half and scoop with a spoon into a blender, squeezing the remaining juice in. Chop the banana and place in. Squeeze in the lemon and then add the water.
Ingredients can be entered in any order but I tend to add the water last. Blend all the ingredients and serve.
Let me know what you think and have a play around with ingredients if you wish.

Sounds good but depending on where you live and where you can get the ingredients quite expensive for the regular expat. Instead, I can highly recommend a drink available at the 7/11

Not a smoothie persee, but healthy nontheless and cheaper.
