In episode 97 of the Just Japan Podcast, host Kevin O’Shea chats with Adam Shaw about studying Japanese as well as life in Japan.

Adam studied Japanese for a year at university in the United Kingdom before coming to Japan four years ago. Since then Adam has studied Japanese, immersed himself in the culture and is working towards his JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) Level 1.

Kevin and Adam discuss whether or not it is necessary to become fluent in Japanese in order to enjoy life in Japan. There are people come here and live for many years with minimal amounts of the language. What more can someone get out of Japanese culture and how can they enjoy life to the fullest with some good Japanese skills under their belt?

Adam shares some of his Japanese language study tips and strategies, talks about apps he uses in his studies and lets us know about his YouTube channel (SakanaJin).
