Pompeii Exhibit
The art of Pompei is the subject of a major exhibition at the Fukuoka City Museum. Over 80 pieces, many in “Pompei red,” tell the stories of the residents of the doomed Roman city. The remains of Pompei were uncovered in the 18th century; these days over two million people visit each year. The show comes to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy.

Tuesday: Art behind the magic
The Art of Disney: The Magic of Animation
Through nearly 500 works of original art, sketches and concepts starting from the legendary “Steamboat Willie” and “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” to “Frozen” and the latest “Moana,” this show focuses on the moment when life is given to the characters. It will aim to discover “The Magic of Animation” that was brought by Walt Disney and his animators’ imagination, innovation and the technology that made it all true.

Wednesday: Stage dive with royalty
Carousel Kings
Pennsylvania’s pop-punk Carousel Kings have anchored their name as one of the most ambitious and creative rock machines in recent years. Their hometown of Lancaster, PA is the same town that bred the metal bands August Burns Red, Texas In July and This Or The Apocalypse. They visit Japan for a mini-tour with their latest outing, “Charm City.”

Thursday: Sake ’n’ ramen
Ippudo Stand Sake Sampler Night
International ramen purveyor Ippudo presents its first Sake Sampler Night in its hometown of Fukuoka. Local liquor shop Sumiyoshi Sake has selected its favorite brands from across Japan to create a compact yet comprehensive menu — with explanations provided by a helpful English guide. Included in the ¥1,500 fee are either two local sake varieties paired with two side dishes, or alternatively, simply four kinds of sake tasting.

Friday: Get down to it
Tower Of Power
For close to 50 years, American soul unit Tower of Power has been creating its own kind of music. Since 1968, Tower of Power has delivered its unique brand of music to its fans, appearing before sold out crowds as they tour the world each year. Tower’s retro sound has made it a favorite in Japan, where all things funk and soul are treasured.

Saturday: Drop the mic
DJ Krush "Kiseki" album release party
The man who launched a thousand turntables in Japan is back with his first album since 2015—that’s actually pretty fast for downtempo master DJ Krush considering his last album was ten years before that. Krush will be dropping the needle, and a slew of MCs including album participants OMSB, Meiso and Rino Latina will be dropping the mic at Shibuya’s largest dance palace.

Sunday: Art of the future
Open Space 2017: Re-envisioning the Future Artist Talk
Telecom giant NTT’s multimedia museum presents a talk associated with its new show “Open Space 2017: Re-envisioning the Future.” A professor at NYU, Kyle McDonald is an artist who works in the open with code. He is a contributor to arts-engineering toolkits like openFrameworks, and spends a significant amount of time building tools that allow artists to use algorithms in creative ways. Kyle is also artist in residence at Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon, as well as YCAM in Japan.
